Isometrics settle it

Sustained holds under moderate load can lower muscle and tendon pain for a period afterwards. Useful on an angry day.

Shin splints are a bone-load problem

Medial tibial stress syndrome is the bone and its lining responding to repeated load, not an inflamed muscle sheath.

Rest alone does not fix it

Rest settles the pain and lowers the capacity. The pain returns with the first week back unless strength went up in between.

Three couplets · two rounds · twelve minutes · legs that take the miles

A

Pump it

Ankle pumps + calf isometric
A1

Seated ankle pumps

60 s · slow reps

Leg out straight; point the foot fully away and pull it fully back, briskly.

Easier smaller range  ·  Harder slower and further

R1R2—
A2

Seated calf press isometric

5 × 15 s · ×2

Ball of the foot into a wall, knee bent; press steadily and hold without moving.

Easier gentler press  ·  Harder 20-s holds

R1R2
B

Front of the shin

Dorsiflexion rocks + tibialis press
B1

Seated dorsiflexion rocks

60 s · slow reps

Foot flat, heel down; rock the knee forward over the toes and back.

Easier smaller rock  ·  Harder further forward

R1R2—
B2

Isometric tibialis press

5 × 15 s · ×2

Top of the foot under a fixed edge; pull the forefoot up against it and hold.

Easier gentler pull  ·  Harder 20-s holds

R1R2
C

Tap and hold

Toe-heel taps + heel raise hold
C1

Seated toe and heel taps

60 s · slow reps

Sitting; tap the toes down then the heels down, alternating briskly — count pairs.

Easier one foot at a time  ·  Harder faster

R1R2—
C2

Seated heel raise hold

5 × 15 s · ×2

Knees bent; lift the heels and hold at the very top with the toes flat.

How to run it

  1. Pain rule: up to 5/10 during, back to your normal by the next morning, no worse week to week.
  2. Shin pain spread along more than a hand's width of bone is a load problem. One sore spot the size of a coin is not — that one needs assessment.
  3. Cut the running volume now, not later. This programme replaces the miles while the tissue catches up.
  4. Isometric holds first: tension without movement is the calmest way to load an angry calf or shin.
