Straight knee.
Bent knee.
Two muscles.

Deficit range matters

Loading the calf from below level, with the heel dropped, builds strength in the range push-off actually uses.

Bent knee finds the soleus

With the knee bent past about 20°, the gastrocnemius slackens and the soleus does the work. Straight-knee raises miss it.

Soleus strains are sneaky

Soleus injuries build up quietly over weeks rather than tearing suddenly, and they take longer to settle than gastrocnemius tears.

How to run it

  1. Straight knee loads the gastrocnemius, bent knee loads the soleus. Both, every week.
  2. The soleus is the one that carries running. It is trained with the knee bent and it is trained heavy.
  3. Three seconds up, one at the top, three seconds down. Count only full-range reps.
  4. Cramp means the muscle is working at a load it is not used to. Shake it out, drop a level, carry on.
