Push off.
Stop dead.

Toe-off is the last push

The final push of every step comes from the calf and big toe. Weak there and the whole stride shortens.

Calf strength and walking speed

Plantarflexor strength is the biggest single contributor to walking speed, and walking speed tracks with independence in later life.

Range before speed

Win the ankle range first; loading a stiff ankle fast is how the next problem starts.

Three couplets · two rounds · twelve minutes · feet that carry you

A

Run

Running in place + A-skips
A1

Running in place — forefoot

60 s · slow reps

Land under the hips on the ball of the foot; count the left foot only.

Easier marching  ·  Harder faster turnover

R1R2—
A2

A-skips

12/side · ×2

Knee up, toe up, heel up; skip with a short, elastic, quiet contact.

Easier marching in the same shape  ·  Harder higher and faster

R1R2
B

Stairs

Stair drive + step-up jumps
B1

Stair drive

60 s · steps to beat

Up the stairs on the balls of the feet, one at a time and fast; walk down.

Easier walk up  ·  Harder two at a time

R1R2—
B2

Step-up jumps

8/side · ×2

Drive off the step to a soft landing on top; step down under control.

Easier fast step-ups  ·  Harder higher step

R1R2
C

Stop

Acceleration steps + deceleration stops
C1

Acceleration steps

60 s · slow reps

Three hard driving steps forward from standing, then walk back and go again.

Easier two steps, slower  ·  Harder five steps

R1R2—
C2

Deceleration stops

8 reps · ×2

Three quick steps then stop dead and freeze in the landing shape for two seconds.

Easier slower approach  ·  Harder faster approach

Round 2own it — beat Round 1 by quality
6:00A1 → A2

Each couplet: 60 s scored → the loading set → 10 s to move on. Done at 12:00.

How to run it

  1. Springs before sprints: the ankle must store and return energy before it runs.
  2. Quiet feet are the test. A loud landing is a landing the muscles did not absorb.
  3. Add hops in small steps. Tendons adapt slower than muscles and far slower than enthusiasm.
  4. Keep two calf sessions a week for life — it is the cheapest insurance a leg has.
