Phase 2 · Control the opening · Session E

Straight line.
Every open.
Every close.

Phase 2 opens on tracking — the jaw travelling straight rather than swinging, which matters far more than how wide it goes.

Clicking is not always a problem

A painless click is found in a large share of people who have no jaw complaint at all. Clicking with pain or locking is different.

Tongue-up opening

Opening with the tongue held on the palate limits the range to the safe, rotational part of the movement and keeps the opening straight.

Conservative care works first

Education, jaw exercises, manual therapy and habit change are first-line treatment. Irreversible dental work is not.

Track it

Mirror-guided opening + guided closing
A1

Mirror-guided opening

In front of a mirror; open slowly and keep the midline of the jaw travelling straight down.

Easier smaller opening  ·  Harder slower

A2

Guided closing

12 reps · ×2

Close just as slowly as you opened, keeping the line straight all the way to rest position.

Easier smaller range  ·  Harder slower

B

Correct it

Finger-guided tracking + midline opening
B1

Finger-guided tracking

C

Control it

Slow opening + controlled closing
C1

Slow opening

60 s · slow reps

Five seconds to open, five to close — the slowest version of the movement you can manage.

Easier smaller range  ·  Harder slower still

R1R2—
C2

Controlled closing holds

10 × 5 s · ×2

Stop halfway through closing and hold there — control in the middle of the range.

Easier shorter holds  ·  Harder longer holds

How to run it

  1. Open with the tongue on the roof of the mouth. That single cue controls most of what goes wrong.
  2. Use a mirror. The jaw should open in a straight line — if it swings to one side, shorten the range.
  3. A click without pain is not an emergency. Clicking that comes with pain or locking needs a dentist.
  4. Quality over range. A small, straight, quiet opening beats a big crooked one every time.
