Habit reversal works

Simply noticing and releasing a clench, repeatedly through the day, measurably reduces symptoms over a few weeks.

Clenching is a daytime habit too

Most people think of night grinding, but daytime clenching while concentrating is extremely common and far easier to change.

Nail biting and pens

Biting nails, pens or cheek loads the jaw in exactly the way you are trying to reduce. Worth noticing.

Three couplets · two rounds · twelve minutes · a jaw that rests

Notice

Habit check drill + screen-trigger check
A1

Habit check drill

60 s · slow reps

Every five seconds: are the teeth touching? Release and reset. That is the whole drill.

Easier every ten seconds  ·  Harder every three seconds

R1R2—
A2

Screen-trigger check

12 reps · ×2

Look at a screen for five seconds, then check the jaw — screens are the commonest trigger.

Easier shorter bouts  ·  Harder longer bouts

B

Release

Face relaxation + jaw release reps
B1

Face relaxation

60 s · slow reps

Soften the forehead, then the eyes, then the jaw, then the tongue — top to bottom, repeatedly.

Easier fewer areas  ·  Harder slower and fuller

R1R2—
B2

Jaw release reps

15 reps · ×2

Light clench for one second, then a full deliberate release — teaching the contrast.

Easier gentler clench  ·  Harder longer release

Replace

Rest position practice + nasal breathing
C1

Rest position practice

60 s · slow reps

Lips together, teeth apart, tongue up — return to it every time you notice you have lost it.

Easier shorter holds  ·  Harder longer holds

R1R2—
C2

Nasal breathing holds

12 × 10 s · ×2

Lips closed, tongue up, breathing only through the nose for ten seconds at a time.

Easier shorter holds  ·  Harder longer holds

How to run it

  1. Clenching is a habit, and habits are broken by noticing them. Check your teeth are apart every time you look at a screen.
  2. Stress goes into the jaw. Breathing is not an optional extra in this programme.
  3. Chew on both sides. One-sided chewing is one of the easiest habits to fix and one of the most useful.
  4. Keep two sessions a week for life — and keep the rest position all day.
