Track four numbers

Knee bend and straightening, chair stands in thirty seconds, walking speed and balance time. Measured every few weeks, they tell the whole story.

Aids are weaned, not dropped

Coming off a frame or sticks is a planned progression. Keeping one longer than needed trains a limp.

Walking speed matters

How fast you walk predicts independence and recovery quality. It is worth measuring and worth training.

Three couplets · two rounds · twelve minutes · a joint that works again

A

Range

Bend retest + straightening retest
A1

Knee bend retest

60 s · slow reps

Same measurement as session 4 — note how much further the foot slides now.

Easier use the other foot to help  ·  Harder hold five seconds

R1R2—
A2

Straightening retest

10 × 5 s · ×2

Heel propped; does the back of the knee reach down further than in session 4?

Easier lower prop  ·  Harder longer holds

R1R2
B

Walk

Walking speed test + stair test
B1

Walking speed test

60 s · steps to beat

Walk a set distance at your normal pace; count the steps and note the aid you used.

Easier with the aid  ·  Harder fewer aids

R1R2—
B2

Stair count test

12 steps · ×2

Count the stairs you can manage, and note whether you needed the rail and which order you used.

Easier fewer steps  ·  Harder no rail

R1R2
C

Strength

Chair stand retest + heel raise test
C1

Chair stand retest

60 s · slow reps

Thirty-second chair stand again; compare with session 4 and note whether hands were used.

Easier use the arms  ·  Harder arms crossed

R1R2—
C2

Heel raise count test

15 reps · ×2

Count full heel raises before the height drops; compare both legs.

Easier hold the counter  ·  Harder one leg

The clock

Round 1settle in — 70%, perfect tracking
0:00A1 → A2
2:00B1 → B2
4:00C1 → C2
Round 2own it — beat Round 1 by quality
6:00A1 → A2
8:00B1 → B2
10:00C1 → C2

Each couplet: 60 s scored → the loading set → 10 s to move on. Done at 12:00.

How to run it

  1. Range first, strength second. A joint you cannot straighten or bend will not get strong in a useful range.
  2. Walk little and often rather than one long walk. Ten minutes, six times a day beats an hour once.
  3. Heel strike, roll through, push off. Watch for the limp and correct it deliberately.
  4. Stairs: up with the good leg first, down with the operated leg first.
